The BRBC is exploring capacity building for water testing with the Nakoda Community and the Nakoda Youth Council. With support from Alberta Ecotrust, this project has been an incredible learning experience; navigating the challenges and protocols of an Indigenous-led water project, while empowering youth to engage in community science as a way to enhance one’s connection to the land and water. BRBC supports CABIN monitoring (Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network) in the Elbow Valley. CABIN is a national, standardized program for assessing freshwater health to monitor and manage our watershed in partnership with ERWP.
Through CABIN, we collect and analyze aquatic invertebrate data, a reliable indicator of water quality, using consistent protocols recognized across Canada. This science-based approach allows us to track ecosystem health, guide resource management, support biodiversity research, and collaborate with communities and academia to protect our rivers for the future.
