Upper Fish Creek State of the Watershed: online report released!

The Bow River Basin Council (BRBC), in partnership with Palliser Environmental Services Ltd. (PESL) and the Fish Creek Watershed Association (FCWA), is delighted to present the latest edition of the Upper Fish Creek State of the Watershed Report. This updated report builds upon the original version completed in 2021 for the Fish Creek Watershed Association, and it was meticulously crafted by Alejandro Caguao, the GIS Technician for BRBC and a master's student at the University of Calgary.

Mike Murray, the executive director, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We are exceptionally proud and excited to share this collaborative project with you. Our collaboration with the Fish Creek Watershed Association has allowed us to infuse local knowledge and expertise into this report.” This project marks a significant milestone within the overarching State of the Watershed Report (SOW) project, which BRBC is developing to represent the condition of watersheds throughout the Bow River Basin.

David Swann, FCWA Chair, commended the BRBC's support, saying, "The BRBC helped substantially with guidance and our first grant to establish the organization and engage the excellent services of Sandi Riemersma of Palliser Environmental Services and the basic watershed research needed. This report exemplifies the benefits of working together. We look forward to future collaborations on our shared goals."

What makes this release particularly captivating is the presentation format. We have harnessed the capabilities of ESRI's Experience Builder web application tool, incorporating a wide array of GIS features to illuminate various types of data. This data has been meticulously created, analyzed, and manipulated to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intricate state of the watershed in the Upper Fish Creek area.

The report was assembled through a combination of various studies conducted in the Upper Fish Creek, which have been used to study and monitor the state of the watershed. In addition, open data sources were utilized to reinforce the study and enhance the report, aiding in the creation of an interactive cartographic product.

All sub-watershed reports will be published in the online interim State of the Watershed until the full report is complete.
